Apple watches are not only a fantastic fit for your workout routine, they are also a great way to ensure you don’t miss your workout.
Apple watches are a bit like a good Fitbit, only they allow you to track the number of steps you take and the calories burned during your workout and then instantly report that information to your phone. I could definitely see myself using one of these on the treadmill or the elliptical machine. I think the biggest issue I have with these is they’re a hassle to get to.
I don’t have to get near an Apple Watch, but I do need to have it nearby. I have an iPhone, but since I’m in Europe, I’ve never used it to track my running or cycling sessions at home. I’m already wearing a Fitbit, but I do like to wear it on the go, and the Apple Watch would be perfect for that too.
Personally, I think these types of devices are an unnecessary distraction for most people. I do think that a lot of people have a sense of “I should wear these to exercise”, but that is not a good reason to carry around a bunch of unnecessary gadgets and constantly check if you’ve swiped your phone. Plus, I think all of us runners should take a look at the Fitbit app as well.
There are a lot of great ways to track your progress throughout your workout, and the Apple Watch has a ton of them. For example, you can set a reminder to remind you to get an extra 15-20 minutes of sleep (like I do) and the watch will automatically tell you when that time is up.
Not to mention that with those alerts you can easily tell if you’re getting enough sleep or if the alarm is being triggered by something as simple as the water pressure in the shower. This could be very useful if you’re doing a workout on a treadmill with a music playlist that plays while you move around.
For those who don’t know, a workout playlist sounds like a lot of fun, but you have to be careful while running. The reason is that you are creating a workout playlist just for your workout, and that playlist plays for as long as you are moving. The longer you run, the longer that playlist will last and the harder it will be to change it.
Well, if you are going to be running a lot, you might as well do it efficiently. Apple watch keeps pausing at the very end, so that you can actually stop the workout completely and take a break. You will need to be careful because if that pause isn’t there, it will go off in your face, and that can be very distracting to your workout experience.
This isn’t the first time Apple has had problems with people with watches not pausing at the end of a workout. The first time Apple did this was in the past, and I’m sure it’s not the last. But with the iPhone 4S, Apple has promised to fix this problem by adding a feature that will disable this pause. That feature is not implemented yet, so I’m not sure how long before this pause can be removed.
But still, if you put your phone in a pocket and start a workout, the pause will still be there. This is just a bug, and it may be the new iPhone version that has this issue. But I have a feeling that Apple will fix it eventually, so I can live with it.
