I feel like I am the only person in the world who believes that our mind and body are separate, two distinct entities. For most of us, this is a notion that is hard to wrap our minds around. In the last few years, however, I’ve witnessed a noticeable shift towards an emphasis on how our mind and body work together, even when they don’t seem to be doing so at all.
That shift has happened in the realm of workout. With the widespread adoption of new technologies, we are now able to track the many variables that create, sustain, and dissipate the effects of the workouts we are doing. This is in large part due to a new science of biofeedback. Biofeedback is a technique where you wear a small device that records the effects of your workout (e.g. heart rate, sweating, etc) in real-time.
The technology is becoming more and more sophisticated, and it is getting easier to train ourselves to be more aware and effective at the body. In all likelihood, the next big trend in workout will be the next big trend in fitness. Biofeedback will be it.

I remember when I first started working out to a gym and the first thing I did was just put on a sweat suit and get the heck out there. Now I have to wear a vest and a hat and a pair of sweat pants and a shirt and a gym bag, and I like it. I like how it feels to be sweaty and to be working out. And I like how it feels to be sweaty and to be working out in a gym that has a treadmill.
The treadmill is another thing that has become ubiquitous in gyms. You hear about these gyms that have exercise machines, and you see these gyms that are filled with treadmills. We are told that we should be burning calories at a constant rate, so we should be sweating and sweating and sweating. It is all very nice, but it’s not a long-term solution.
The treadmill itself has a number of drawbacks. It is, by far, the most expensive exercise machine on the market. The treadmill also requires you to set up a bunch of sensors that determine how much you are weight-bearing, and how much you are exercising. These sensors have to be calibrated each time you use it, and the process of setting them all up can take a while, which means it’s not that you can just throw on the treadmill and go to work.
